What wall shape requires less brick than a regular straight wall? A crinkle crankle wall, also known as a serpentine, ribbon or wavy wall, is a type of garden wall built in a serpentine shape with alternating curves, typically found in the United Kingdom. The walls have proved ideal for growing fruit trees. Depending on the arch amplitude, this type of wall requires less bricks to build. Due to unusual shape, the wall can be made just one brick thin, while a regular straight wall will require width of two or even three bricks. One of the longest in Europe is located in the estate village of Easton, Suffolk (England) and survived a huge damage in 2013. Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd President of the USA, used the serpentine walls in the design of the University of Virginia, which he founded.
